Welcome to a place where one can experience summer 365 days a year.
A place that has more than 20,000 exotic plants animals, an hourly thunderstorm; a great café and a restaurant; as well as lots of events all-year-around.
Entering the Biosphere for the very first time, we are immediately surrounded by stunning greenery. In the large space, covering over 5000 m² (about 1.23 acres), a majestic waterfall completes the relaxing atmosphere.
As we slowly start the tour, things get interactive. We can try a pump that shows just how much force a tree needs to get the water from its roots up to every single of its branches. Another pump imitates a geyser and we get to see a tall column of water appear out of the nearby pond.
The Biosphere offers many events throughout the years for all visitors. Once a year, for a couple of weeks just before spring starts (late February-March), there is an orchid exhibition. During German school holidays there are events specially suited for children and families.
We follow the marked route which leads us to the Butterfly House to admire the many forms and colors of these beautiful creatures.
The logo of the tropical world features the red-eyed tree frog, which you can also spot in one part of the tour. When the opportunity arises to tour the premises when the sun sets and everything gets dark, you might be able to spot the frog walking around and opening its great, red eyes. The so-called Taschenlampen-Abenteuer, a “torchlight adventure” takes places a couple of times during the year.
A part of the exhibition, the Aquasphere, is dedicated to the ocean world. Besides getting the opportunity to learn more about the mystics of the deep sea and its animals, the exhibition is educational. We get to learn that it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to fall apart in the ocean, which is great reminder to take care of our nature, including oceans.
Continuing the tour we reach the jungle pond where we get absorbed by the handsome koi carps and relax for a while amidst all the greenery next to us.
The building, used previously for the federal horticultural show, underwent a construction and opened as the Biosphere in 2002.
With almost 20,000 plants and over 150 trees from various arboriculture farms around the world there are, surprisingly, only two gardeners taking care of the tropical garden. The animals are also well taken care of, with three specialists on-site.
And the best thing about the Biosphere? Guaranteed summer weather all-year-long, with around 25° Celsius (77° Fahrenheit) indoors.
