A scenic route that took us along the Danube river in just over an hour.

While visiting Vienna (Austria), we were looking for a spontaneous trip. With Bratislava, the capital of neighbouring Slovakia, conveniently located close-by we found a fun way to travel there.

We decided for the Twin City Liner, a catamaran boat that connects the two capital cities in just 75 minutes.

Watch our impressions from the ride on the Twin City Liner between Vienna, Austria and Bratislava, Slovakia.

The modern terminal in Vienna is located right next to Schwedenplatz, which can be easily reached by the metro (U-Bahn), buses and trams. The connection that will take us speeding on the Danube river has been operating since summer 2006.

Once we got on board, we settled in the comfortable seats. The boat also offers special types of seats, like the Captain’s Lounge or a seat on the open deck (provided suitable sunny weather).

As the catamaran starts its journey in the Danube canal, we still get to enjoy the view of the charming city of Vienna through the large, panoramic windows. Accompanying us on the journey is a commentary that highlights the most important sights on the route, as well as some interesting information from the history of both countries.

Twin City Liner also offers select refreshment, such as a coffee, a typical apple strudel or a light lunch in the on-board bar.

Once the boat enters the Danube river, we get to enjoy the views from the open deck,

where we experience just how fast the Liner is running — at almost 70 kilometres per hour.

During the journey we spot many wonderful beaches hidden along the Danube’s coast. Later on, as we approach the border of Austria and Slovakia, the Danube and Morava rivers confluent. Here we admire the ruins of Devin castle that stood here since the 15th century.

As we continue speeding on the Danube, we encounter a special moment – we are in the middle of the border between the two European countries. Austria happens to be on the right coast, while Slovakia is on the left coast, when looking in the direction of travel.

Arriving in Bratislava, we immediately notice the so-called “UFO Bridge” (officially called Most SNP). It is the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge to have one pylon and one cable-stayed plane.

The ride with the Twin City Liner provides an excellent alternative to the existing bus and rail connections between Vienna and Bratislava. The boat offers a comfortable and educational ride with plenty of information about the Danube river.
